The Middle Ages and Renaissance periods left an indelible mark on Bologna’s history and culture. The city is adorned with architectural marvels that narrate its rich past. Among these historical landmarks, the Towers of Bologna, the Valverde Cistern, and the Neptune Fountain hold a special place.

During the early Middle Ages, from the 11th to the 13th century, Bologna saw the construction of numerous towers, numbering over a hundred at their peak. Bologna became a “selva turrita” – a city brimming with towers, akin to a pre-millennial Manhattan.

The Valverde Cistern, a hydraulic engineering masterpiece from the 16th century, was erected to supply water to the city. The link between the towers and the cistern, though indirect, is profound. The wealth and power symbolized by the towers facilitated the construction of the cistern, thus enhancing the citizens’ quality of life.

Furthermore, a more direct connection binds the Valverde Cistern and the Neptune Fountain. The cistern gathered water from the Valverde area, which then flowed to feed the grand Neptune Fountain, a renowned 16th-century monument celebrating the city’s prowess.

Locally, the Bolognese fondly and playfully refer to the colossal Neptune Fountain as “Al Zigant” (the Giant) in their dialect, emphasizing its monumental stature and significance. This endearing nickname is a nod to the statue’s immense size, standing at 3.2 meters tall and weighing a staggering 28 tons.
